Two Headed or Two Tailed Coins

There are many two headed coins that have been sold over the years as a novelty item. Many two "tailed" coins have also been produced. The coins feature either the obverse or reverse coin design on both sides. The owner of such a coin is surely to win every coin toss.

Two sided coins come in almost every denomination of U.S. coinage and are sold in the back of coin magazines, in novelty stores and magic shops. These "magician's" coins are made of two coin halves that have been modified and put together. Although many times, the coins used to make them were struck at a U.S. Mint these are not a minting error.

Double sided coins are frequently found by the novice coin collector and are commonly mistaken as a genuine error. A double sided error of this type is not possible nor is it listed in any error guide. The obverse and reverse dies used to produce a U.S. coin are made differently so that there can not be a mix up. The coin dies would not be able to physically fit into the coin press in the opposite positions thus eliminating the possibility of this happening.
