Author's Notes & Comments
The Merchant’s Exchange building is featured on several tokens. The building was planned when the Tontine Coffee House, a hotel that also rented shop space, became too small and crowded for NY merchants to continue to use for their daily business. The new and much larger Merchant’s Exchange building, deemed indestructible, burned in the Great Fire of New York in 1835.
